The Seabrook Bridge on the southern coast of Lake Ponchartrain was closed indefinitely May 11 to vehicle traffic to allow workers to perform unspecified emergency mechanical repairs, according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD). The agency did not provide an estimate of how long the repairs will take. Marine traffic under the bridge will remain open. With the shutdown of LA 1264 in both directions during repairs, motorists are advised to use Chef Menteur Highway (US 90) or Interstate 10 as alternate routes. (Source: WVUE 05/11/22) Seabrook Bridge is a medium-rise twin bascule carrying Lakeshore Drive, and connecting Leon C. Simon Drive on the upper side of the bridge with Hayne Boulevard on the lower end. The bridge is operated by the Orleans Levee District. It normally stays in the down position for vehicular traffic, but provides sufficient clearance for most marine traffic.
