NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard rescued a boater June 12 whose vessel capsized after taking on water in Lake Pontchartrain, north of New Orleans. The mariner, James McGhee, was transferred to University Medical Center in reportedly fair condition. The Coast Guard got a distress czall from McGhee around 2 a.m. The vessel was taking on water in the lake between the Highway 90 bridge and the I-10 Twin Span. A CG response boat crews and MH-65 helicopter crew were dispatched. The crews located McGhee stranded on a jetty in Slidell after he had swam away from the vessel. He was airlifted to UMC, where he was treated for symptoms of shock and hypothermia. McGhee's access to a VHF radio "saved his life," said Cmdr.
