The Navy is requesting to retire four Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) from its fleet as part of a cost-cutting plan that will net the sea-service $186M, according to its budget request. The request comes one year after it proposed retiring the first four LCS. Its FY-22 budget documents call for cutting the second Independence-class aluminum trimaran USS Coronado (LCS-4) - built at Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala. - and three Freedom-class variants: USS Fort Worth (LCS-3), USS Detroit (LCS-7) and USS Little Rock (LCS-9). The Freedom class ships have been struggling with problems with its propulsion systems. The older of tthe ships was commissioned in 2012. DoD and the Navy gave two separate rationales for cutting the ships. (Source: USNI 05/28/21) Navy Tries to Cut Four Littoral Combat Ships to Save $186M in FY 22 Budget - USNI News
