Mil.housing & renters insurance

An active duty Marine colonel and his family have been stuck with a $14,000 bill from a private military housing company, Lincoln Military Housing, which operates some 6,000 housing units at Camp Pendleton, Calif.. The couple is worried other military families could face similar burdens even if they have renters' insurance. He asked Lincoln for work invoices and began reaching out to his insurance company, USAA. Their renters’ insurance policy documents said damage to base housing was covered as long as he was on active duty at the time and the house was “government-controlled.” That was the problem: The federal government owned the land, but the house was leased by a private company, contracted through DoD, that rented to servicemembers in exchange for their military housing allowance.
