La. student going to flight academy

The Navy has chosen 28 high school Navy/Marine Corps JROTC students from across the country to attend its 8-week 2023 Summer Flight Academy aviation program.

Among the selectees are Jake Tirado, a student at Mandeville (La.) High School. Tirado participates in competitive soccer and is a member of the National Honor Society and school band; and Jonathan Gerges is another selectee from Mt. Juliet (Tenn.) High School. Gerges plays varsity basketball and soccer.

Academy students finish the program with a private pilot certificate and college credit from Delaware State University (DSU), Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) or D2 Aviation School.

The program aims to increase diversity in Naval aviation.

The Commander Naval Air Forces (CNAF) program includes about 40 hours of flight training in either a Vulcanair V.10 or Piper Warrior as well as aviation-oriented classroom work.

About 70% of Summer Flight Academy's alumni are now directly affiliated with the U.S. military, according to the Navy.

The Navy sponsors the Summer Flight Academy program for students participating in Navy and Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. (AvWeb 06/08/23) U.S. Navy Selects Students For 2023 Summer Flight Academy - AVweb
