Jackson State University's College of Engineering, Science and Technology partnered in May with an international architecture, engineering and geospatial firm to provide students with internships and practical experience.
As a part of the partnership, 15 students were selected and offered summer internships to work closely with engineers within the Army Corps of Engineers' Research and Development Center in Vicksburg.
Students will explore "ways to improve and expand upon" current numerical coastal inundation modeling systems developed to simulate storm surge, waves, tides and coastal flooding problems.
JSU said the models are primarily utilized to prepare, respond, and effectively recover from natural disasters as a community. The program began in May and is set to end Aug. 11.
VP and Program Director, for the consulting firm, Richard Washington credits U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) for vision and "connecting the dots" for the partnership and securing the funding.
