GULFPORT, Miss.- Aspiring young pilots had their abilities tested through some creative paper-folding at the second annual John C. Robinson “Brown Condor Association” Paper Airplane Contest hosted by the Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum in Gulfport. Folding paper is a tedious task ... even for adults. Lyman resident Kristi Anderson says she's trying but “they’re not going very far ... It seems like it wouldn’t be difficult (but) it’s not easy.” Anderson brought her 5-year-old grandson Zion, who woke up at 8:30 saying: "Let’s go, let’s go!" She never knew he even had interest in airplane, but "he is having a ball.” The experience could lead to greater things. Maybe it's the beginning the start of a career in flying. It's giving the kids confidence and to be creative, says museum director Francisco Gonzalez. The contest tested participants in flying distance and loft time. They learned to change and adapt, with help from experienced co-pilots. Jason Melton brought 5-year-old grandson Earl. It's about "making memories,” he said. Beginning Jan. 26, the museum will host a “History Night” from 6-8 p.m. once a month on Thursdays, but it will be once a week during February for Black History Month. (WLOX 01/14/23)
