Delta State University’s football team wasn't in the national championship game Jan. 9, but the school's alternative mascot - "The Fighting Okra" - was part of ESPN's ongoing series of commercials with school mascots. The Fighting Okra is not the Mississippi school's official mascot but was generated on a lark by students in the late 1980s, saying it was perfect "because Okra is tough, green and prickly." The cheerleader sponsor and mascot flew to Bristol, Conn., to shoot the commercial with anchors Kevin Neghandi and Elle Duncan. “We were thrilled for ESPN to use The Fighting Okra ... (and) was a no-brainer for us to say yes to their request,” said DSU athletics director Mike Kinnison. (Clarion Ledger 01/10/23)
