The River District, a neighborhood planned for the Mississippi riverfront in downtown New Orleans, will soon have earth movers rolling across empty property flanking the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center as $26M in street work begins to pave the way for millions of square feet of apartments, offices, shops and stores.
It has taken more than 2.5 years since the contract was awarded to get to the point of moving dirt.
Project leaders say delays were due to complex lease negotiations with the convention center, which owns the nearly 50-acre development site, and with City Hall over permits and other plans.
It's taken longer than expected, according to CEO Chris Maguire of Cypress Equities, leader of the project along with developer Louis Lauricella.
But, he says, New Orleans hasn't seen such a project for decades, and wants to get it right. (NOLA.com 11/05/23) Work starts on River District, but some plans have changed | Business News | nola.com
