VICKSBURG, Miss. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Vicksburg District announced that the Lindy C. Boggs Lock will resume locking vessels beginning Nov. 18. The lock will be open 24/7.
The lock was closed Sept. 28 when a crack was discovered in a miter gate anchorage. Crews from the District worked around the clock to complete repairs and reopen the lock.
Navigation on the Red River is critical to transporting commodities such as refined oil products, fertilizer, construction grade sand and gravel, and steel products.
Boggs L&D is the first lock and dam on the Red River and part of the J. Bennett Johnston (JBJ) Waterway system.
It is located on the Red River at mile marker 43.8 about 11 miles north of Marksville, La. The L&D system is part of the Monroe Navigation Project Office and operated by a contracted company.
OUACHITA RIVER PROJECT COMPLETED
USACE's Vicksburg District celebrated the completion of the Ouachita River Levee Crown Gravel Resurfacing Project Nov. 20 in Columbia, La., near the Riverton Recreation Area.
The project included updating 45 miles of Ouachita River levees and depositing about 46,000 tons of limestone gravel along the crowns of the levees - enough to fill a football field with 15 feet of rock - which reinforces the structures to protect nearby communities. (USACE Vicksburg 11/21/23)
