There’s been a noxious odor wafting across parts of Jefferson Parish, La., but it’s not from the wildfire smoke or the West Bank landfill.
Residents of Elmwood, River Ridge and nearby communities have been suffering bad smells from a sewage treatment plant.
The Eastbank Wastewater Treatment Plan is the third largest in Louisiana and treats some 30M gallons of water that flow from faucets and toilets every day across the Jefferson's east bank.
Residents have dealt with these odors for years, but some say its gotten worse over the past few months.
Jefferson Parish Council member Deano Bonano, whose district includes the plant, said the odor control system has been broken for about a year and could take months to resolve, he said.
"It's a legitimate concern," said Bonano, and complaints have had an up-tick over the past two years.
The Eastbank wastewater treatment plant is one of five in Jefferson Parish. The others are in Harvey, Marrero, Bridge City and Lafitte. (NOLA.com 11/21/23) Sewage plant sends smells to River Ridge, Elmwood | Jefferson Parish | nola.com
