MERIDIAN, Miss. - Gov. Tate Reeves was in Meridian to break ground on a new $3M project called the Wildlife Exclusion Fence that will extend over 16 miles around NAS Meridian. The purpose of the multi-phase project is to "protect our runways," pilots and aircraft from animals getting in the way of aircraft taking off and landing, said Gov. Reeves. "It’s really a safety project," Reeves said. This project will also allow NASM to perform its training mission at its highest and providing proper facilities for future service members. “(S)ustaining our mission is very important ... in terms of great power competition. ... We need to be training the future naval aviators that will go around the globe supporting and defending our Constitution, and that mission happens right here at NAS Meridian,” said the Commanding Officer Capt. Brent Moore. The project will take nearly a year to complete. This is the initial phase of the multi-phase project. (WTOK 03/06/23)
