Six environmental justice groups have filed a lawsuit in the District of Columbia court against the federal government in an attempt to stop a Gulf of Mexico oil and gas lease sale from happening on March 29. The groups' lawsuit says the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) failed to properly vet the environmental impact of the lease sale and used “insufficient and arbitrary environmental analyses” to justify it. Earthjustice, an environmental law non-profit, filed the suit on behalf of Healthy Gulf, Bayou City Waterkeeper, Friends of the Earth, the Center for Biological Diversity, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club. BOEM released its final plans for the lease sale less than two weeks ago. The sale will offer about 73.3M acres in the GoM's central and western regions for bids. Amid legal battles over the future of federal O&G leasing, the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 forced the Biden administration to hold separate lease sales by March and September 2023.
