Miss.'s lone burn center to close

JMS Burn and Reconstruction Center in South Jackson, Mississippi’s lone burn center located at Merit Health Central, is scheduled to close its doors Oct. 14, the hospital confirmed to the Clarion Ledger. The JMS center treats adult and pediatric burn patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Pediatric patients make up about 33% of total inpatient burn cases. The center has 13 burn intensive care rooms, 20 burn step-down patient rooms and a 12-room outpatient clinic. After Oct. 14, burn patients will be redirected to Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga., Firefighters Burn Center - Regional One Health in Memphis or USA Health in Mobile, Ala.  A statement from the hospital reads that the complex medical needs of burn patients "require support from a broad range of specialists" - including plastic surgery, gastroenterology, ophthalmology and urology. The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge of staffing has made it "increasingly difficult for us to recruit the breadth of specialists needed to maintain the burn program, which is the primary reason why we’ve made the difficult decision to close the Burn Center effective Oct. 14.
