Unemployment rates were higher in August in 16 states and stable in 34 and the District of Columbia, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Sept. 16. All 50 states and DC had jobless rate decreases from 2021. The national unemployment rate rose to 3.7% in August but was 1.5 percentage points lower than August 2021. Non-farm payroll employment increased in 10 states, decreased in 1 state, and unchanged in 39 states and DC in August 2022. Minnesota had the lowest jobless rate in August, 1.9% followed by New Hampshire/Utah, 2.0; and Louisiana, 3.5%, which set a new series low. The District of Columbia had the highest unemployment rate, 5.1%; and New York, 4.7%. In total, 17 states had lower than the US unemployment rate. Eight states and DC had higher rates.
