Alabama’s beaches will have an “interim” airport available for commercial flights by March 1, 2023, the Gulf Shores Airport Authority announced Sept. 8. Which final carrier decision will offer flights and to where hasn't been announced. But Fuller says two airlines - Sun Country, which provides flights to Minneapolis, and Elite Airways, which flies to Nashville - are slated to provide those interim flights from Gulf Shores. He said there are ongoing discussion with a larger carrier. The biggest growth for commercial aviation is leisure markets,” Scott Fuller, director of the Gulf Shores International Airport, told AL.com. He's hoping the opening of a 12,000-square-foot modular terminal will fuel interest in Gulf Shores. The Gulf Shores Airport Authority has signed an agreement with Atlanta-based Tbi Airport Management and VINCI Airports for construction of a new air terminal. The 2-phase project has an estimated $3.7M initial investment going toward construction of an interim terminal. Fuller has said it could take several years to build a permanent facility. The for interim facilities is to accommodate traffic now and not wait for a 2-year design and construction project to be completed, he said. (Source: AL.com 09/08/22)
