The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced Sept. 14 it has been directed by Congress to award leases to the highest valid bidders in Gulf of Mexico oil and gas Lease Sale 257, which was held last November. BOEM accepted 307 of the highest valid bids, totaling almost $190M. Thirty-three companies participated, generating over $191 M in high bids for 308 tracts covering 1.7M acres in federal waters of the GoM. Lease Sale 257 was the eighth offshore sale held under the 2017-22 National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program. A federal judge invalidated the results in February 2022 before this reinstatement.
