MERIDIAN, Miss. - Mississippi veteran Greg Washington plans walking 1,800 miles from Mound Bayou, Miss., to West Point, N.Y., to raise awareness about the growing suicide rates among veterans and young adults. “Twenty-two vets die a day from suicide," he told WTOK-TV. That number equates to more veterans dying from suicide than were killed in the Vietnam War. “I was almost one of those 22." Washington plans to get to U.S. Army Academy in West Point in time for its 9/11 memorial ceremony in an effort to honor his best friend, 2nd Lt. Emily Perez, who was killed in action in Iraq in September 2006. (Source: WTOK 05/21/21) Veteran to walk 1,800 miles to raise awareness about suicide prevention (wtok.com)
