Christine Wormuth became the first woman in U.S. history to become Secretary of the Army in thte early evening of May 25 following Senate confirmation. That is, until the Senate reversed that confirmation hours later. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced the reversal, which was carried by C-SPAN. His staff did not immediately respond to an Army Times request for clarification. However, the committee reversed course a second time, confirming her as Secretarty of the Army on May 26. UPDATE: U.S. Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) held up Wormuth’s nomination until an Army major’s pay issue ($50K) was fixed. He'd set a June 1 deadline. Cramer said the soldier had been in Africa for 10 months without pay, he told reporters May 27. "It was never about (Wormuth),” he said, bur rather about the Army's archaic (HR) system that doesn’t pay people. Cramer lifted his hold on her nomination Thursday morning after Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks assured him the Army would fix it. (Source: Army Time 05/26/21)
