The Air Force has reversed its decision to dismiss hundreds of AFROTC cadets and restore nearly 130 scholarships, officials said, after lobbying efforts assailed the decision as punishment for qualified cadets that would create financial problems for families. The pandemic’s wave of uncertainty triggered the initial decision. To rebalance the numbers, the AF made drastic cuts that they swallowed up cadets with excellent grades and high fitness marks, according to officials, sending scores of families into financial panic after scholarships vanished. Congressional reps, retired officers and a wave of parents/students pressed the AF to reexamine decisions to reject 1,000 cadets. Policy officials relented May 6, reinstating 400 cadets, about 130 of whom got scholarships back. “We cut too deep,” said Ann Stefanek, an Air Force spokesperson.
