Parish, O&Gs settle wetlands suit

Cameron Parish and the state of Louisiana have reached a potential settlement with major oil companies - BP, Shell and Hilcorp - in a deal among more than 40 lawsuits filed by parishes seeking billions of dollars for wetlands losses caused by the O&G industry.

Parties from the 7-year lawsuit informed 38th Judicial District Court Judge Penelope Richard that a confidentiality agreement had been reached, according to the court clerk.

The confidentiality agreement did not specify whether the settlement requires the companies to restore damaged property in the East and West Hackberry oil fields or that the O&G firms will pay financial damages.

Also, it remains unclear whether the settlement only includes BP America Production Co., Hilcorp Energy Co. and Shell Oil Co.

Executed settlement documents have not been released nor will they be, according to the office of Gov. John Bel Edwards.

Cameron is Louisiana's third-largest parish by area, and the largest parish on the coast. It has been one of the parishes most affected by coastal erosion. (NOLA.com 12/11/23) Oil firms settle coastal suit with Cameron Parish, state | Environment | nola.com
