More than 650K people in America will spend Christmas on the streets, in shelters, or with Good Samaritans because they don't have a place of their own.
According to a Department of Housing and Urban Development report, homelessness rose 12% on a year-over-year basis. It represents the highest number reported since 2007.
It's considerable jump this year can be attributed to the higher cost of living as well as the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The percentage of homeless veterans climbed by 7.4%. The rate of homeless families with young children rose by 15.5%. NYC is the metropolitan region with the highest number of homeless individuals, followed by LA and two other southern California counties. (Emergency Email Wireless Network (12/16/23)
