The first plant in North America designed to make battery-grade solvents for electric vehicles may be headed to Waggaman in Jefferson Parish, La.
A new $491M production unit is planned for Cornerstone Chemical Company’s Waggaman complex, where two other proposed industrial projects have generated controversy and pushback.
UBE America Inc., an American subsidiary of the Japanese chemical and machinery manufacturer UBE Corp., wants to build a plant to make dimethyl carbonate (DMC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC). The chemicals are used as solvents in lithium-ion EV batteries.
The 240,000-square-foot plant would produce 100,000 metric tons annually of DMC and EMC, according to an Industrial Tax Exemption Program application UBE filed with Louisiana Economic Development. (NOLA.com 12/19/23) UBE to build EV battery chemical plant in Louisiana | Jefferson Parish | nola.com
