BILOXI, Miss. - The Fisher House at Keesler AFB has been recognized as a no-cost home away from home for hundreds of veteran and military families.
The Fisher House provides temporary lodging for active duty and their families, retirees and their families, and veterans and their families receiving medical care at a military hospital or outplaced to a local community hospital.
After 30 years, the two-story, seven-bedroom home has received a major makeover estimated around $1M.
“New paint, new carpeting, some renovation work on the HVAC system, all new furnishings,” said manager Ron Gribble. “So, it was actually a two-faced process because it was different parts of money and it was just over a year that the entire renovation took.”
Fisher Houses were founded by husband and wife Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher in 1990 after a Navy admiral’s wife pitched them the idea. There are currently 95 Fisher houses. Jackson votes to close/consolidate 11 schools
JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson Public School District Board of Trustees voted to 5-1 to approve its Optimization Plan, introduced in October, which would allow for the closure or consolidation of 11 schools in the 2024-25 academic year.
Superintendent Errick L. Greene said this plan addresses the need for strategic measures due to a significant decline in district enrollment, amounting to about 9,500 students lost between the 2015-16 and 2023-24 school years.
The revised plan includes a list of school buildings slated for closure or consolidation. (WAPT 11/19/23) Jackson Public School Board of Trustees approves optimization plan (wapt.com)
