Morgan City is in its design and construction phase of a $30M Ports West Dock Expansion Project.
Through federal, state and port funding, Port Executive Director Mac Wade said the city was able to start its plans on the western dock expansion.
"The port is going through a massive construction project,” Wade told KATC. The port is finishing its $6.5M east dock expansion separately from the $30M expansion.
Plans are to expand the dock for use by smaller vessels by 1.6 acres of concrete laydown.
In January, the port is hoping to secure contracts where up to four ships will be able to import or export from the docks.
The city currently has four dredges running in their waters helping keep water levels high and the channel 20-feet deep. Those dredges cost $500,000 a day to operate. Lower water levels in the past stopped one major food distributor from importing at their dock, he said.
The project will take about 2 to 2.5 years to complete. (KATC 12/11/23)
