NEW LONDON, Conn. - U.S. offshore wind power hit a milestone sending electricity onto a New York grid and becoming the country's first commercial wind farm.
It's a modest start to what experts say needs to be a major buildout of this type of clean electricity to address climate change.
Danish wind energy developer Ørsted and the utility Eversource announced Dec. 6 that the first electricity from what will be a 12-turbine wind farm, called South Fork Wind, is located 35 miles east of Montauk Point, NY.
Two of the 11-mw turbines are up. The second is undergoing testing, then it can begin producing power too.
When the other 10 are spinning, and South Fork opens by early 2024, it will be able to generate 132 mw of offshore wind energy to power more than 70,000 homes. (The AP 12/07/23) Decades after Europe, turning blades send first commercial offshore wind power onto US grid | AP News
Regionally: Two areas in the Gulf of Mexico have been designated Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) with the goal of deploying 30 gw of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030. The first area is about 24 nautical miles off the coast of Galveston, Texas (508,265 acres); and the other located about 56 nautical miles off the coast of Lake Charles, La. (174,275 acres).
