BATON ROUGE, La. - A planned $176M expansion of Syrah Technologies' graphite processing plant in Vidalia, La., near the Mississippi River, will give Louisiana a major role in the supply chain for electric vehicle batteries, according to Louisiana economic officials. The Australia-based firm will add 180,000 square feet to its 50,000 square feet facility, where graphite will be made into “active anode material” used in lithium-ion batteries. Electric vehicle maker Tesla signed a contract with Syrah Resources. Tesla will buy material from the Vidalia plant, which sources graphite from graphite mines in Mozambique, reducing the car maker's dependence on China. The expansion will add 36 new jobs to its current 19 workers. Vidalia is about 100 miles north of Baton Rouge.
