NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard suspended its search and rescue (SAR) at 5:37 p.m. on Feb. 17 for a missing cruise ship passenger 150 miles offshore of Southwest Pass, La. The cruise ship Carnival Valor was returning to port in New Orleans from Cozumel. Rescue crews searched more than 2,514 square nautical miles for about 14 hours. CG New Orleans received a call at 3 p.m. on Feb. 16 reporting a passenger on the cruise ship had fallen overboard. The CG directed the launch of rescue crews to begin searching. “The decision to suspend a search-and-rescue case is never one we come to lightly,” said Chief Warrant Officer Tricia Eldredge, command duty officer at CG New Orleans. “We offer our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time.” (Source: Coast Guard 022/17/22)
