Senior Master Sgt. Melissa D. Bridges, superintendent of the 14th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron (OMRS) at Columbus Air Force Base will speak about her perspective on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. at Mississippi University for Women's Pioneers Plaza. The event is open to the public. [Rain location: Carrier Chapel] It is one of several Veterans Day activities to be held across Mississippi and the Golden Triangle. As superintendent, Bridges provides leadership and management in organizing, equipping and training 61 personnel supporting the base's 3,400 service members, and 13,500 beneficiaries. She is principle adviser to the 14th OMRS commander on authorizations, assignments, personnel, and morale and welfare issues. Among her overseas assignments were deployments in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and the NATO Resolute Support Mission. She assumed her post in December.
Below is a listing of other area Veterans Day and Veterans Week activities:
■ East Mississippi Community College’s Golden Triangle campus will pay tribute to the nation’s military with a program entitled, Proud to be an American, at 9 a.m. on Nov. 9 in Lyceum Auditorium. Guest speaker will be Nick Clark, a former VP for Institutional Advancement at EMCC. He is an alumnus and recipient of the college’s Distinguished Service and Alumnus of the Year awards.
■ Mississippi State’s Center for America’s Veterans will host its first Veterans Week Golf Tournament on Nov. 9 at the MSU golf course. Opening ceremony at 8 a.m. Shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $250 a team, $65 for individuals. Proceeds support the center’s scholarship fund. To sign-up, visit veterans.msstate.edu.
■ MSU's Student Veteran Association will host a pancake breakfast from 7-10:30 a.m. Nov. 8 in the Center for America’s Veterans. The public is invited. Visitors are encouraged to bring a toy for “Toys 4 Tots.” Cost is $5, which will help SVA attend the national conference.
■ American Legion Post 13 will join other veteran organizations and veterans to place flags on the gravesites of veterans at 9 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Oddfellows Cemetery on Fellowship Street in Starkville.
■MSU's Center for America’s Veterans will have a veterans recognition ceremony at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the university's drill field. MSU President Dr. Mark Keenum will make remarks.
■ A Veterans Day program will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 near the World War Veterans monument at the entrance to Sally Kate Winters Park on Broad Street in West Point.
■ Heritage Academy, 625 Magnolia Lane, in Columbus, will host a Veterans Day Assembly from 9-10 a.m. Nov. 11 in the school’s gym.
■ MSU's Center for America’s Veterans will host 'Lunch With Legends' at noon Nov. 12 the center’s multi-purpose room. Guest speaker is Randy Jones, Army veteran and West Point resident, who was a movie contributor to “Black Hawk Down.”
■ KMG Creations Productions presents its 3rd annual Starkville Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. Nov. 13 downtown. A musical is set for noon at Oktibbeha County Courthouse.
■ Mississippi State will host Tennessee State in a football game on Nov. 20, which is a military appreciation game.

■ The City of Petal will host a cookout for Veterans Day at the Civic Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is also free to the public.
