The University of New Orleans’ Boysie Bollinger School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Scale Innovations, a New Orleans industrial design firm, are teaming to design and engineer an electric boat (EB). Electric vehicles (EVs) are being adopted by manufacturers and consumers globally. Electric boats are the new EV sector growing rapidly in the U.S. with the market projected to double in the five years. The start of the collaboration began in 2020 when UNO naval architecture and marine engineering student Nigel Watkins was working as an intern at Scale. Watkins had previously completed an internship at an electric yacht company in Europe, and believed electric boats could be viable in New Orleans. This gave Scale a vision that EBs could be used for surveying and conservation. This project comes at a time of increased demand for work vessels due to a major renewable energy transition across the Gulf Coast, and a rapid growth in the coastal restoration industry. Offshore wind initiatives are already at play in the region, with wind farms beginning to develop for the Gulf of Mexico.
