The tug industry is evolving as more owners are embracing green technologies to reduce their environmental wake. While tug designers, owners and operators are focused on “the now,” eyes are affixed to future demand for autonomous vessel applications, full battery power, and hybrid fuel operations. Owners/operators are looking at long-haul financial investment in technologies to reduce costs. There’s also been an increase in containerships’ force tug customers to adapt to compact, higher-powered tugboats to handle these ships. The future of the tug industry appears bright, and will be adapting to technological advancements. Work Boat is hosting a free, live webinar at 2 p.m. (CT), on Nov. 10 with a panel of tug experts that include retired Coast Guard aster Chief John Buchanan, president of Harbor Docking and Towing in Lake Charles, La.; Coulston Van Gundy, director of Commercial Operations at Crowley Engineering Services; and Dave Lee, senior account manager of New Build at ABB Marine & Ports.
