JACKSON, Miss. - Enrollment at Mississippi’s eight public universities dropped by less than 1 percent overall this past year, according to figures released Nov. 2 by the universities’ board of trustees. A total of 76,510 students are studying at Mississippi's public universities this fall, compared to 77,154 last year (-0.8%). Figures for each school varied. The most drastic change in the last two years was at Delta State University. The student population declined by just more than 9 percent between 2020-21. The population declined by 27 percent between fall 2019 and fall 2021. At Mississippi State, there was a seventh straight increase. The school of just under 23,000 students increased its population by 0.4 percent between 2020-21. Mississippi University for Women saw a decline of over 8 percent between 2021 and last year. The number of students enrolled dropped to 2,477 from 2,704. The student population at Jackson State increased by 2.3 percent to 7,080. University of Southern Mississippi lost 460 students from this year to last. Its population dropping to 14,146. Alcorn State dropped almost 5 percent to 3,074. Mississippi Valley State (+1.6%) and the University of Mississippi (+.8%) both increased. (Source: The AP 11/02/21)
