The Chief of Naval Air Training, the flag-command that leads initial aviation training for new pilots and naval flight officers, is incorporating new technologies into its curriculum that includes hand-held devices and full simulators to better train airmen. Rear Adm. Robert Westendorff, head of CNATRA, told a panel over the weekend at the Tailhook Association’s online symposium. Officials are instituting virtual and constructive (LVC) training, and the Navy is working to embed those into its pilot training program. Until recently, the aviation training syllabus had not gone through significant changes in decades, he noted. But now, as part of its Project Avenger initiative, the service is working to include new technologies, from virtual reality goggles pairing with mobile devices to “high-fidelity trainers” meant to simulate how an aircraft flies, into its training. “We’re leveraging virtual goggles where we can immerse ourselves in 360-degree videos,” Westendorff said. Pilots will also be able to use “high-fidelity trainers” and the Virtual Mission Training System, which can pipe live targets into the radar onboard the T-45C trainer jet as part of the increased reliance on LVC training.(Source: USNI News 09/14/20) https://news.usni.org/2020/09/14/navy-harnessing-new-technology-to-restructure-aviation-training MISSISSIPPI NOTE: NAS Meridian, Miss., is home to jet pilot training.
