Navy releasing Thresher docs

WASHINGTON - The Navy began releasing Sept. 23 unclassified documents concerning the loss of the submarine USS Thresher (SSN 593), fulfilling a February 2020 ruling by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Thresher sank on April 10, 1963, more than 200 miles off the Massachusetts coast while conducting sea trials. All 129 onboard - 112 crew and 17 shipyard personnel - perished. A formal Court of Inquiry convened to determine the cause. It did not conclusively determine the cause from available evidence. The probe did identify multiple weaknesses in Thresher's design and ability to save the ship. In the intervening years, no evidence has been found that would identify the cause. Documents will be released on a monthly basis, in order by which it was processed. Records are available for public viewing in the THRESHER RELEASE folder at: https://www.secnav.navy.mil/foia/readingroom/SitePages/Home.aspx (Source: DoD 09/23/20)
