La. envisioning wind power

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced Nov. 11 a renewable energy initiative for the Gulf of Mexico, with plans to harness the state’s strengths in offshore energy production in the development of wind power, America’s No. 1 source of renewable energy. Gov. Edwards presented its vision at the inaugural meeting of the Climate Initiatives Task Force that he created this year. Offshore wind power will be one of several strategies of the task force to curb greenhouse gas emissions. “This is not some ‘pie in the sky’ promise of economic opportunity,” the governor said. At the nation’s first commercial offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island, Lafayette, La.-based Aries Marine Corp. and Galliano, La.-based Falcon Global LLC are liftboat operators that helped develop the Block Island wind farm. For that project, Metairie, La.-based Keystone Engineering provided design assistance and Houma, La.-based Gulf Island Fabrication built foundation jackets and piling. (Source: Work Boat 11/12/20)
