Thoma-Sea Marine Constructors of Houma, La., was awarded a $178M contract to build two new research ships for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The ships are named Oceanographer and Discoverer. Oceanographer will be homeported in Honolulu. The second ship’s homeport has not been assigned. The ships will each operate with a crew of 20 and be able to carry up to 28 scientists for up to 40 days. They will be able to a myriad of research in both shallow and deep water. The ships are expected to be completed by June 2024. About 60 percent of the work will be in Houma. (Source: NOLA.com 02/14/21)
