The newly formed advocacy group - made up of theNational Council of Negro Women; Education, Economics, Environmental, Climate and Health Organization; Sierra Club and Healthy Gulf - filed a lawsuit in federal court Nov. 17 against the U.S. Department of Transportation and Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The suit is about a proposed road extension in Gulfport that DOT hasn’t completely examined potential impacts to the area’s wetlands. Gulfport officials are proposing the extension of Airport Road to reduce traffic congestion. The DOT approved an environmental assessment in September, which found the project, which could cost $48.5M, would have “no significant impact.” But the advocacy group claims DOT violated federal regulations by not conducting an environmental impact statement, which is required for projects with a certain footprint.
