Shell mulls alternative La. fuel site

Royal Dutch Shell is considering converting its shuttered Covenant, La., crude oil refinery into an alternative fuel manufacturing site. "Given increasing customer demand for low-carbon fuels, we now view Convent as well-positioned" to support Shell’s potential future plans "while delivering value to shareholders," said Curtis Smith, a Shell spokesperson told NOLA.com. The Covenant refinery, which straddles Ascension and St. James parishes, was up for sale in mid-2020, but there weren't any amenable suitors. Afterwards, it was shut down. Shell is mulling the possibility of producing low-carbon alternative fuels instead of regular gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, but hasn't make a final decision, said Huibert Vigeveno, downstream director at Shell. The closing caused 700 workers and 400 contractors to be laid off while Shell assessed its options for the 900 acre site.
