The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has enabled automated night-time airspace authorizations for unmanned aircraft through its Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) system, a service of a variety of companies approved by the FAA. LAANC enables unmanned aircraft operations in controlled airspace around 726 airports was updated to accommodate requests to operate between evening twilight to morning twilight. The agency Sept. 30 that LAANC would now support authorizing night flights in the same simple way for daytime operations, using software provided by one of several companies the FAA has approved as LAANC-service providers. One other upgrade around LAANC-enabled airports means accessibility to remote pilots. LAANC divides controlled airspace into grids, with altitude limits from zero to 400 feet. The new grids can be viewed on the UAS Facility Map.
