The federal U.S. Circuit Court of Appels affirmed - in a 9-8 ruling on Dec. 8 - that Mississippi parents may pursue a lawsuit that says the state allows great disferences in funding between predominantly Black and predominantly white schools. The ruling supports an April decision by 3-judge panel of the same court. The suit indicates fewer than 11 percent of students at their children’s schools were proficient in reading and math, and the schools had a D rating from the state. It contrasted three higher-income, mostly white schools in Madison and DeSoto counties and Gulfport, where more than 65 percent of students were proficient in reading and math, and the schools had A ratings.
