For decades, policymakers at the state Capitol in Jackson have known that Mississippi klags behind behind most other states in public education spending. Now, a a June 1 released report from a legislative watchdog group - Mississippi’s Joint Legislative Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review (PEER) - confirms that the state spends less per stiudent than each of its surrounding states - Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The report uses information from state FYs that begin July 1 and end June 30. FY 2019 ended June 30, 2019.  Based on enrollment for FY-19, Mississippi funding per student from state, local and federal sources was $10,240 . The lowest level per student compared to thos 4 other states.
