Ex-NASM IP heads CNATRA reserve

Chief of Naval Air Training’s (CNATRA) Reserve Component held a change-of-command ceremony Oct. 9 at the National Naval Aviation Museum aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola, Fla. Capt. Rigel “Pep” Pirrone relieved Rear Adm. William L. “Wilbur” Angermann as commanding officer. Angermann was promoted to flag rank after the ceremony. The Reserve Component mitigated active-duty manning shortfalls resulting in a 20 percent increase in CNATRA’s overall aviator production under Angermann’s watch. Pirrone is a native of Buffalo, N.Y., and received his Wings of Gold in 2001. He previously served as an instructor pilot at both VT-7 (at NAS Meridian, Miss.) and Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 125, and earned recognition as Instructor Pilot of the Year in 2008. He attended flight training in Pensacola, Fla., and subsequently Meridian, earning his Wings of Gold and distinguished naval graduate honors in 2001. He was at VT-7 for 18 months as a Selectively Retained Graduate instructor pilot. He is a graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans with a degree in in civil engineering. In 2017, he graduated from the Air War College in Alabama, and reported to Training Air Wing 5 (NASWF) where he commanded the largest Reserve component within CNATRA from January 2019 to October 2020. Angermann has assumed the post of deputy commander at U.S. Naval Air Forces Atlantic.
