First La. wind farms; Oschner peds

Two foreign companies - Danish firm Vestas and Mitsubishi-owned Diamond Offshore Wind - have signed agreements to build the first offshore wind farms in Louisiana waters.

Vestas was granted nearly 60,000 acres off Cameron Parish and Mitsubishi-owned Diamond Offshore Wind was approved for a 6,162-acre area off Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Gov. John Bel Edwards called the agreements a big step in diversifying Gulf of Mexico energy production beyond oil and gas.

The companies and state officials have declined to give specifics about the proposed wind farms.

The Norwegian company Kontiki Winds has also been negotiating an offshore wind agreement with DNR. (NOLA.com 12/13/23) Louisiana signs agreements for its first offshore wind farms | Environment | nola.com

Oschner to add standalone pediatric hospital thanks to Benson family

New Orleans will get a second standalone children’s hospital as Ochsner Health expands its pediatric footprint with a major donation from Gayle Benson, the health system announced Dec. 13.

The new 343,000-square-foot facility, called The Gayle and Tom Benson Ochsner Children’s Hospital, will be located adjacent to the current Oschner facility.

The new hospital will include specialty pediatric services, a larger emergency room, a Level IV surgical neonatal ICU and enhanced operating rooms and imaging services.

Officials say moving the system's pediatric department to a standalone will allow them to recruit more specialized doctors, provide better experiences for families and compete with the likes of Texas Children's or Boston Children's hospitals.
