A rare 3.3-magnitude seafloor earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Mexico about 95 miles southeast of Venice, La. - the nearest town - and can’t be easily explained, an expert says.
The quake happened around 11:15 p.m. on June 4, along the continental shelf, U.S. Geological Survey data shows.
“It’s weird, but not too weird,” USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughan told McClatchy News. “It’s just a rare thing and ... (t)hings shift and move all the time. (W)e do have some history of them there.”
USGS data shows it was centered just over 3 miles below the seafloor. (NONLA.com 06/05/23) Rare earthquake reported off US coast in Gulf of Mexico | Environment | nola.com
