EO targets mil.spouse employment

WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden took steps June 9 to eliminate employment barriers for military-connected spouses by signing an executive order (EO) that will impact 16,000 spouses working for the federal government and others, including caregivers.

The nearly 20 actions in the EO will attempt to put a dent in a 21% unemployment rate among military spouses that has not budged in a decade and address challenges faced by veteran spouses, most of whom are women.

First Lady Jill Biden said the actions were based on conversations with military spouses and children across the country in the last two years.

She called the order “one of the most consequential executive actions taken to support military spouses who want to continue their careers.”

Neary 20% cited of military families cited challenges with spousal employment was one of the main reasons for leaving service, according to the White House. (Stars and Stripes 06/09/23) Biden issues executive order targeting military spouse employment | Stars and Stripes
