Plaquemines Port jumps first

The Plaquemines (Parish, La.) Port, and its representatives, bought 1,000 acres of land and 8,200 feet of Mississippi River frontage on the West Bank of the Mississippi River about 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The business move gave a jump on its “rival” at Port NOLA for a proposed gateway container ship terminal. Port NOLA was in the planning stage of building a terminal at Violet, La., but the St. Bernard Parish Council voted, at the behest of angry residents, against that proposal. Plaquemines Port is among the largest in the world for moving bulk cargo – such as agricultural products, oil, and petrochemicals. However, global shipping has been moving toward containerized cargo. Several Gulf of Mexico ports – like Houston and Mobile, Ala. - have been making moves to cut into the market for a piece of the pie.
