South asked to conserve electricity

As high temperatures continue to blaze across the South and more people are staying inside, Mississippians, Midwest and other Southern states are being asked to conserve electricity usage.

In a press release, Central District Public Service Commissioner Brent Bailey urged state residents to be conscious of electricity consumption due to a maximum emergency alert by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). The emergency alert is in effect until 10 p.m. Aug. 24.

Much of Mississippi is part of the MISO regional transmission organization - the so-called "air-traffic controllers of the transmission grid, ensuring all areas have adequate resources and electricity," Bailey said in a telephone interview.

The high temperatures are also causing concern across the South and Midwest creating a surge in the demand of electricity resources.

MISO is asking residents to do what they can to limit electricity consumption as not to put a strain on the transmission grid.

The MISO grid provides and monitors electricity transmission services to 17 states, New Orleans and Manitoba, Canada. (Clarion Ledger 08/24/23) Mississippians asked to lower electricity usage due to extreme heat (clarionledger.com)
