FAA: Garbage firm & unsafe airport

Jackson's emergency garbage vendor - New Orleans-based Richard's Disposal Inc. - continues to operate from Hawkins Field despite Federal Aviation Authority concerns. In an April 26 letter, the FAA objected to the firm leasing land at the airfield to park garbage trucks. The FAA has asked the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority, which approved the lease, to get the company out "expeditiously."  The letter claims garbage residue can attract wildlife and make the airfield unsafe. The letter was in response to guidance sought by Jackson Municipal Airport Authority CEO Paul Brown about leasing standards and whether the lease was a proper use of airport land. The firm has been picking up residents' garbage since April 1 through an emergency contract that has led to conflict between Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and City Council. The mayor's office indicated Lumumba will appeal FAA's decision.
