1st woman to lead NASM squadron

Navy Cmdr. Meghan Angermann never imagined she’d have a career in the military, but on Feb. 14, after 20 years of service, she became the commander of Training Squadron Nine (VT-9) at Naval Air Station Meridian, Miss. “I'm thankful for this opportunity and thankful that women are able to serve in more positions,” she said. She is the first woman at NASM to command a squadron. Angermann, who was previously executive officer, and assumed the role at a change of command ceremony. Her interest in aviation was piqued by her father, who was a pilot. Years later, Angermann said she enjoys teaching young pilots to fly. “My favorite part” is seeing the “light bulb come on and know that they're absorbing and learning. Out-going CO, Cmdr. Brian Baumgaertner, retired Friday after 20 years of service.
