JACKSON, Miss. - Mississippi's congressional delegation is urging President Joe Biden to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to civil rights leader Medgar Wiley Evers. U.S. Sens. Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, and U.S. Reps. Bennie Thompson, Trent Kelly, Michael Guest and Mike Ezell on Oct. 31 sent a letter to Biden encouraging him to bestow the honor on Evers. He was assassinated outside his home in Jackson on June 12, 1963, as a result of his work to promote racial equality, voting rights and social justice. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest U.S. civilian honor awarded to individuals.
WH threatens veto of 2 GOP-led House bills
The White House issued veto threats against two GOP-led House appropriations bills expected to be up for a vote this week as lawmakers seek to avoid a government shutdown in November.
The bills would cut Department of Transportation funding by $7B, $1.2B from HUD and nearly $4B from EPA. If either reached President Biden’s desk, he would veto them, according to the White House.
Both would have to make it through the GOP-controlled House and the Democratic-controlled Senate.
In both cases, the WH argued the bills undercut an agreement reached by administration officials and GOP lawmakers in May on spending as part of negotiations to raise the debt limit. (The Hill 10/30/23) White House warns Biden would veto House appropriations measures | The Hill
